Examples of applications

Telephony

MP3 walkman, camera, camcorder, personal digital assistant: as time goes by, mobile phones are being transformed into genuine electronic Swiss army knives. And the list of applications is likely to increase, with the NFC (Near Field Communication) standard initiated and promoted by Sony and Philips since 2002.
Yet the concept behind this brand new abbreviation is quite simple: transforming a mobile phone into a device capable of replacing credit cards and of receiving information in the form of audio, video and text files, by simply placing it in front of an RFID-type tag or terminal for example. This is made possible thanks to an integrated chip capable of receiving and emitting short-range waves (less than ten centimetres).

"A world first"
Over six months, inhabitants from Caen, all Orange mobile phone subscribers, tested this new technology during a life-size experiment launched by France Telecom and its partners - Samsung - who provided phones, and NXP Semiconductors - who produced the chips and the NFC systems.

A MUST: Virtual tourist guide

Creation and development of "e-tourism" services to promote the Mont Saint-Michel." An on-site experiment will be conducted from the 5th of September to the 15th of October 2011.
Visitors to the Mont Saint-Michel will be offered the opportunity to take part in the test in a real-life situation. They will discover hundreds of documentary videos on the Mont's heritage, will compile their own visit and will offer precious feedback which is sure to contribute towards inventing tomorrow's tourism-related devices.

M Stadium: An array of contactless applications in the stadium - before, during and after the match

The key aim of the project is to tackle the many challenges and opportunities involved in introducing mobile applications within stadium settings, via contactless technologies (NFC - Near Field Communication). The project promises to develop innovative new usage scenarios.  New consumer applications that will be experimented by users inside two stadiums: the Stade de France in Paris and the Stade Malherbe in Caen. The experiment should offer the opportunity to design, perfect and test new consumer habits within the context of sports events such as meetings and matches (ticket sales, accreditation, payment, access control...)
